Sylvia Gaither Garrison Library
Named in honor of the first librarian, the SGGL supports the overall mission of the BDM by collecting and making available for use resources that document and elucidate Maryland's African American Heritage. The Sylvia Gaither Garrison Library is located within the Banneker-Douglass Museum.

Collections
Archival records, audio-visual materials, blueprints, books, maps, pamphlets, periodicals, photographs, and Internet access for research purposes.

The collection has a retrospective focus. The historical specialty includes books, encyclopedias, and periodicals from the later 1960s -- 1980s.

The SGGL houses an African American rare books and manuscripts collection. This 500-item compilation of materials ranges from the 1780s -- 1970s.

The SGGL is open by appointment during regular museum hours. The public is invited to use materials on site.

Volunteer Opportunities

To become a volunteer, or inquire about volunteer opportunities not listed below, please contact the outreach coordinator at 410-216-6187.

Library Assistant
Help keep our holdings organized and accessible with such projects as updating the catalog, maintaining the vertical file, or digitizing delicate materials.

Archives Assistant
Help to preserve and improve access to historical documents & photographs by creating descriptive inventories of selected collections.

Program Assistant
Don’t have much time to volunteer? Help out with the BDM Oral History Program, BDM Photo ID Project, or the annual SGGL anniversary celebration.

Marketing Assistant
Help to promote our collection by assisting with the production of access/publicity tools, such as the library newsletter, book marks, and annotated bibliographies.

Donation Guidelines
The development of the collection and its preservation are the result of thoughtful planning and careful selection. You must make arrangements with the Archivist to discuss your donation prior to visiting the museum with your donation.

Please consider the following:

1. Acceptance of all donations is at the discretion of the Archivist.
2. Accepted donations may or may not be incorporated into the SGGL or the MD African American History Repository (MAAHR). Items that are not accessioned into either of these collections may be incorporated into the educational collection, may be distributed to other libraries or repositories, may be donated to charity, or--in rare case—may be dispensed with at the discretion of the Archivist.
3. For the health of all of our holdings, the Archivist cannot incorporate items that show any symptoms of are mold, mildew, infestation, or any other detrimental agent.
4. While the SGGL will consider almost any item that reflects Maryland’s African American Heritage, were are especially interested in receiving donations of the following type:
  • Self-published works
  • Photographs
  • Oral history interviews
  • Recordings of family events
  • Family documents (letters, certificates, etc.)
  • Memorabilia (items from educational, religious, or social activities)

    Please Note: The archivist can provide a receipt of donations received, but cannot indicate monetary value on the donation. If the donor wishes to take a tax deduction, he/she must independently provide all valuations or arrange for a qualified appraisal. The IRS tax code prohibits the Banneker-Douglass Museum from making appraisals for tax purposes.
